Niamh Seraphina Beatrice, you my darling are about to turn 6 months old. 6 months ago I was a day away from giving birth to you and my mind was whizzing! I was scared I wouldn't know how to raise a girl and that I would struggle to navigate us through the sea of pink, princess stuff that seems to take over any 'girl' sections in shops. I was also worried I wouldn't have enough love, patience & energy to be a mother of two.
It all seems to silly now that you are here my sweet smiley girl. You literally light up even the darkest day & since you have arrived you've made us all smile everyday. You smile easily at people who take the time to talk to you & people often stop to say how adorable and bonny you are. We also get told how healthy you look a lot, I think this is a polite way of commenting on your chubbiness. It's undeniable that you are a chubby baby & I love it! I look at all of your adorable rolls of fat & I feel so proud that we made those together. You took to breastfeeding so well & feeding you has been a pleasure. Your brother used to take his time with feeding, but you don't waste a moment when it comes to filling your belly with milk! You can finish a full feed in 5 minute. You also remind me loudly every 1-2 hours in the day that it's time for milk again, but I don't mind as you're so quick that it's nice to be reminded to sit down & cuddle you for a while. Your brother was never very chubby & people would often ask if I thought he was getting enough milk. I knew that he was, but it would bother me that people didn't think he was thriving. I love that you are so obviously thriving and healthy, but I must admit that when you go through a growth spurt & suddenly start 24/7 cluster feeding me & my poor boobs struggle to keep up with you.
I went back to work when you were about 6 weeks old, but I'm only ever gone from you for about 3 hours. However I totally underestimated how hard it would be to leave you, even for those few hours. You're such a placid & happy baby & when I work daytimes you are happy to be without me for a while. However as it approaches bedtime it's a different story! you want your mummy & you're willing to let everybody know about it! You grudgingly drink the bottle of expressed milk that I leave with Daddy for you, but after that you do give Daddy a bit of a hard time. I often return home to a bit of a flustered daddy & a very tired Niamh. However you are a cheeky monkey because as soon as I'm home & you've been cuddled and fed; all of a sudden you are beaming your best smiles & chatting away at Daddy! You already know how to wrap him around your little finger. He doesn't stand a chance against you little lady!
However I do feel guilty that I leave you when you still need me so much, but I do think that it's good for us both too. You get to spend time with Daddy without me distracting you & I have to learn to let other people care for you a bit. You see mummy is very over protective of you & your big brother, but I'm sure you'll have plenty to say on that matter as you grow up. You're already feisty & independent so I don't imagine you'll let me smother you very much! ;)
You absolutely adore your big brother Henry. You try so desperately to get his attention & get to him. You reserve your biggest belly laughs especially for him. All he has to do is give you eye contact & talk to you & you laugh. It's heart meltingly cute and I'm storing these moments up to remember when you start to bicker as all siblings do!
You seem to be growing & developing at the speed of light. You say Mamamama when you want me & Bababa for your dad. You seem to say Bru Bru for Henry & we like to think you're saying brother. We all get so excited when you call us. You are also so strong already! You support for own weight with a little help from us. You roll around trying to get to your favourite toy or your brother. You have such a strong grip, which comes in handy when you try to stop your brother stealing your toys (or getting his duplo toys back!). You're also working hard on your pincer grip....by pinching me when I'm feeding you! :)
We've started to introduce food into your diet recently. As we were starting earlier than 6 months we weren't sure if you would be ready for baby led weaning like your brother was. However you made the decision for us as y ou outright refuse to be fed & force the spoon out of your mouth with a look of disgust! So you are happily feeding yourself finger foods, but you still prefer milk. If you're even slightly hungry or tired you refuse to sit & eat at all. You simply cannot feed yourself quick enough for your liking & the hangry takes over! You take after me that way....do not mess with a Daly girl when she's hungry! :)
I found being your mummy so inspiring! There are so many things that I want to make for you & do with you as you grow up. I love knitting clothes for you in bright colours, the only downside is that you grow so quickly that you don't get to wear the fruits of my labours for long. But that just means I get to start something else for you.
We don't dress you in pink, but you have the most amazing wardrobe! I love shopping for you & your brother. You both have a better wardrobe that your parents do! We often get asked if you're a boy because of the lack of pink, but don't worry you have a fantastic selection of dresses & pretty clothes. We don't only dress you in your brother's hand me downs. :) I hope that you look back & think that your clothes were awesome, but I get the feeling that as soon as you can pick your own clothes I'll have to get used to pink princess outfits!
Anyway I just wanted to write down what life is like for you at 6 months as it's all going so quickly! I don't want to forget a single thing. You have come in to our family & you fit in perfectly! I cannot quite put in to words quite how much we love you, but as I write this you are asleep on my chest & I am breathing in your beautiful baby smell & kissing your soft head savouring every moment with you.
You'll be 1 before we know it and I can't wait for all of your new developments & to see your character develop over the coming months.
Lots of Love
